My Forever Studio: Callum Marinho steals Noel Gallagher’s guitar
Noel Gallagher’s in-house recording engineer tells stories about working with Tom Jones and Coldplay and isn’t afraid to steal his boss’s delicious Gibson guitar. After all, it’s his forever studio, right?
This week’s episode of My Forever Studio, in partnership with Audient, is one for the nerds who equally get their kicks in the control room and on stage. It’s all centred around Callum Marinho, a musician but also a sound engineer, recording engineer and mixer for the likes of Coldplay, Tom Jones and Neck Deep.
Marinho’s a rising star in the engineering and recording world, having cut his teeth at the Monnow Valley residential recording studio and rehearsal facility in Monmouth in Wales. For the past two years, however, he’s been enlisted as the in-house engineer for the one and only Noel Gallagher. It’s no surprise then, as a studio veteran, that he knows exactly what he wants in his dream forever studio.
Asides from his six essential studio item picks, this episode is an honest account of the life of an engineer rising through the ranks. Marinho tells host Chris Barker and Will Betts about how his beginnings in maths and physics tied into sound engineering, how the devastating COVID-19 pandemic led to him handing CVs into Aldi, and about his love for Andrew Scheps’ Neve desk.
We also hear stories about Tom Jones in the studio, and, as a keen drummer, Marinho proudly recalls a time he built a drum kit from scratch for Coldplay. We also hear about how he and Noel Gallagher pick guitars and almost always fall back on the trusty Gibson ES-355.
Thanks to the impressive facilities over at Tileyard Studios near King’s Cross in London, we were able to record this episode in a video format. You can, therefore, have the pleasure of witnessing the nerdy bromance between Will Betts and Callum Marinho blossoming in all its visual glory.
The My Forever Studio podcast has partnered with Audient to offer artists, producers, and engineers the opportunity to design their ultimate creative space anywhere in the universe. Weekly episodes feature interviews with some of the music industry’s most talented individuals, who share their dream studio visions. Past episodes have showcased Dot Major’s London-based setup, Amon Tobin’s floating studio, VNCCII’s futuristic space-based utopia, complete with AI integration, Jordan Rudess’ Hawaiian mountain-top studio and Laurence Guy’s Ex Machina-esque studio in a forest.
While participants are encouraged to think big and unleash their creativity, there are some specific guidelines for the Forever Studio. To keep things manageable, participants must carefully choose the possessions they include, as they are restricted to a limited number of six items. It’s important to note that bundles are NOT allowed!
