This week on the My Forever Studio podcast in partnership with Audient, in which we quiz producers and engineers on the studio of their wildest dreams, we hear from house music producer, Laurence Guy.

Laurence Guy is a UK-based electronic music producer and DJ known for his deep, summery, sample-heavy house grooves usually associated with the likes of Axel Boman, Kornél Kovács and Petter Nordkvist’s label, Studio Barnhus. He’s also released on Shall Not Fade, and on Japanese label Mule Musiq. He’s a dedicated record digger, too, and is always keen to inject his finds as samples into his music or share them in his many DJ sets around the world.

Guy gained critical acclaim with his 2017 debut album Saw You For The First Time, on which the smooth, sax-laden lead track has now racked up nearly 20 million streams on Spotify. More recent singles, such as My Heart Still Leans On You feature skittish beats and home-recorded piano, which you’ll hear more about in the episode and his recent collaboration with Barry Can’t Swim is a smash hit.

In this episode, filmed at the impressive TYX complex at Tileyard Studios in London, we hear about Laurence’s second love, bouldering, and how that ties into the Ex Machina-esque forested location. He also mentions starting out on Ejay, how his production process often includes taking breaks and working on the music when he feels like it with no pressure. We also hear about recording piano on his family’s upright piano using his iPhone and an unexpected luxury item.

The My Forever Studio podcast explores the imaginary creative spaces of renowned artists, producers, and engineers as they envision their ultimate studio in any location across the universe. Each episode offers an intimate look into the minds of the industry’s top talents as they share their dream studio designs. From Dot Major’s London space to Amon Tobin’s floating studio, VNCCII’s AI-integrated future utopia and Jordan Rudess’ Hawaiian mountain-top, listeners are taken on a journey through unique and innovative creative environments. However, participants must adhere to specific guidelines, carefully selecting a limited number of possessions to include in their studio design, with absolutely NO BUNDLES allowed!
