Quality real-time granulator Emergence adds stereo and random modulation— and it’s free
The first plug-in by Patreon-based author Daniel Gergely has been updated to v0.3
Free real-time granulator plug-in Emergence has received a recent update, with v0.3 adding stereo processing, grain pitch quantisation and new random modulators offering control over frequency and probability.
First released by author Daniel Gergely as a submission for the KVR Audio Developer Challenge 2021, the plug-in works like a conventional granulator, continuously recording an input signal into a buffer and playing it back as short grains. With Emergence, up to 600 grains can be generated in four streams, each with its own set of parameters and modulations. There’s also the capacity for grain pitch transposition of 24 semitones in either direction with quantisation, as well as a freeze function for the buffer output. A waveform readout also provides useful visual feedback for the process.
“Emergence occurs when an entity is observed to have properties its parts do not have on their own,” says Gergely, “properties or behaviours which emerge only when the parts interact in a wider whole.
“A single grain is not that interesting. The most exciting things happen when hundreds of overlapping grains play together, creating anything from complex delay patterns to strange noises to beautifully layered soundscapes.”
