With all sounds sampled using “high-end recording equipment,” in Sample Science’s own words, Retro Cazio offers 20 “toy” keyboard sounds, a drum kit, a multi-mode LFO, high and low-pass filters and a choice of polyphonic, legato and monophonic voice modes.
Originally released in 1983 and built around the venerable NEC D931 chip, the digital Casio MT-100 ‘toy’ keyboard is counted among the classic family of Casio instruments. Its sounds ranged from organ, trumpet and flute to cello, harp and vibraphone, and with its host of onboard rhythms and effects, and even a graphic EQ, it has earned its place as a quintessential retro keyboard.

Having produced music and sound design since the turn of the millennium, Sample Science has been developing virtual instruments and sample packs since 2015, with a particular fondness for the lo-fi and retro side of virtual instruments. Founded on “a passion for anything that produces sound and […] old electronics,” its other instruments include Dandelion, a wide-ranging “lo-fi sound module”, Crystal Harp, a multi-mode glassy synth with onboard reverb, “perfect for ambient, meditation and new-age music”, and Northern Boarders, a Boards Of Canada-inspired plug-in instrument “featuring organic electro-acoustic and synthesiser sounds […] sure to please fans of early Warp releases, BOC and AFX.”
Retro Cazio is available in 64-bit 64-bit VST, VST3 and AU plug-in formats for macOS and Windows. Download it for free now from the Sample Science website.
